Since Amazon started having Prime Day, July has become a bargain-hunting month for Lego. Many retailers in the United States (and elsewhere) discount various Lego sets to remain competitive with Amazon. This year, Target, Best Buy, and Lego all had deals aiming to match the online retailer.

I picked up quite a few sets that had been on my wish list, waiting for a sale. The most represented theme is Marvel, but there are also Dots, Avatar, and Creator 3-in-1 sets included too!

Black Panther: War on the Water #76214, 545 pieces:

Deal: Target, $45.00

This set was 30% off at Lego.com, but Target’s price point made this a palatable purchase for me. With 545 pieces, it was hard to grasp the $89.99 MSRP on this set – which essentially looks like a black blob. It could be more attractive, so it has yet to sell well. The five minifigures are the highlight, with four unique to this set, and they are what drove me to include this in my collection.

I will incorporate this in my water area and try blending some black and dark grey with water. If that fails, it is an excellent set to part out. For investors, this was a good deal to snap up. The minifigures are going to help this set’s value after retirement.

Shuri’s Sunbird #76211, 355 pieces:

Deal: Target, $32.99

Another Black Panther set that I’ve thought about purchasing often but considered the MSRP to be too high ($50) for a 355-piece set. It is an attractive build, and I am collecting flying objects from the Marvel Universe. The set comes with four minifigures, two of which are unique.

It is due to retire at the end of the year, so there may be a few more deals on Shuri’s Sunbird as retailers look to dispose of their stock. It was also on sale at Lego.com, but Target offered a deeper discount.

This is a shelf piece for me, though it is a small and light aircraft and could be placed above the city to add some aerial detail.

Nano Gauntlet #76223, 675 pieces:

Deal: Amazon, $48.99

This deal quickly sold out on Prime Day and briefly returned on the second day for an hour (I was watching for my friend who missed it initially). I had almost decided not to get the gauntlets and place my Lego money elsewhere, but this deal was too good to refuse, and both gauntlets would look exceptional next to each other. I am not going down the route of getting the other builds like these (such as Thor’s Hammer, Captain Ameria’s Shield, or the recently revealed Wolverine Claw). The infinity saga was monumental, and these builds look fantastic, colorful, and exciting. The other products do not bring the same excitement and interest.

I am looking forward to building this one and can’t believe the deal Amazon had on it. The infinity gauntlet is frequently on sale, so I will pick that up later in the year.

Spider-Man’s Drone Duel #76195, 198 pieces:

Deal: Amazon, $13.99

I had this on my wanted list for months, never seeing the price fluctuate enough to make me pull the trigger. It is a retired set, so I knew I must act soon. The minifigures are the appeal, though I like the drones to add to my city (they are light and easy to put on risers at the top of buildings to offer some height).

I was surprised to see such a deep discount on a retired set – this isn’t typical, especially for a licensed set with exclusive minifigures.

Crossbones’ Hazard Heist #76050, 179 pieces:

Deal: Amazon, $29.41

Another retired set that I’ve had on my radar for some time. It wasn’t a deep discount on this one, but enough of a saving that I added it to my haul. I am a massive Black Widow fan, and while I have her minifigure, I wanted Crossbones to add to the Civil War collection. It helps that I love the truck too, and it will fit right into my city. I am pleased with this set and the slight savings.

Viking Ship and the Midgard Serpent #31132, 1192 pieces:

Deal: Amazon, $83.99

I bought this set for $100 in December and completed the primary build recently. I have always liked the look of the second build option – the Viking House and have been looking for a similar deal on this set for six months. Finally, there was one on Prime Day. Initially, I missed the deal and took that as a sign, but then it went live again, and I snapped it up. After constructing the house, I will use the extra pieces to add interior detail to the biking ship.

Besides loving the alternate build, this set’s minifigures are so strong that we can always use more!

Mako Submarine #75577, 553 pieces:

Deal: Lego, $47.99

An Avatar set? I know; it’s not my thing. Indeed, I have yet to see the second movie. However, this set was on sale on Amazon and Lego.com, and I was attracted to how it would look in the underwater area I’m creating. The submarine and the coral pieces would look fantastic. I adore the creativity of part usage in the coral piece – I didn’t know they had purple carrots until now! I bought this with a Disney 100 minifigure to meet the threshold for a fun and funky VIP pack from Lego directly (Amazon was selling for the same price, so going to get the GWP and VIP points). I ended up with Oswald from my minifigure blind bag!

Overall, the Avatar set is beautiful but vastly overpriced for non-die-hard fans of the theme. With the 30% discount Lego offered, it was good value. I may pick up Metkayina Reef Home for the underwater area, too – if I see a better deal on that set.

Lots of DOTS – Lettering #41950, 722 pieces:

Deal: Target, $13.99

While not officially on sale, the Target price is lower than Lego.com, so I added this set to my cart. This is an economical way to get plenty of smaller tiles in various colors. These will be used for signs, roof detailing, and adding custom artwork to my buildings. The modern art in the Boutique Hotel inspired me, and I knew this could add a lot of color and personalization to my cityscape.

Target also had Extra DOTS series 8 – Glitter and Shine at half price, and I bought a pack as these look fantastic for adding some details to buildings. I haven’t explored the Dots line before, which is a shame as I see the benefit now that it is ending! I like this add-on pack as the tiles add something different and are a great way to customize builds cheaply. Oh well. Glad to have gotten these for half price.

Final thoughts

Overall, it was a good haul. I got some sets I had been scoping out without going crazy. Overall, I was disappointed with the sales at Lego.com, as other regions had more appealing sets discounted. However, Target came through for me, and I also snapped up a few deals from Amazon.

I didn’t grab the Hulkbuster for $300 or cave and get Thor’s Hammer. I missed Best Buy’s ridiculous deal on the Indiana Jones Temple Run set – 33% off! My friend would have loved that deal as she collects dioramas. I’ve seen that set reviewed, and it looks incredible – stacked with details and play features. That’ll be it for Lego purchases in July, as the August 1st releases are approaching, and many sets have caught my eye.

Did you pick up any sets during the sales? If so, what did you get?
