Why I bought these sets and instructions

I adore the Creator 3-in-1 Cozy House and loved the build (read my review), but I knew I had to double it to utilize the limited space in my city adequately. For my houses, I want them to be modular and as comprehensively furnished as possible. That means staircases and a bathroom – something official Lego sets often omit.

However, I’ve yet to learn to create something freehand or play with software to design a building. So, I was delighted when Brick Artisan quickly released two MOC designs, each using two Cozy House sets that perfectly encapsulated what I wanted to build.

I waited to see if a second set would go on sale until I finally caved and paid the MSRP, as I wanted to create these MOCs. I first chose the Classic Townhouse, which I determined would fit best with the downtown area. I will make the Cozier Home when I find a good sale on Cozy House sets!

Parts & sorting

The last Rebrickable MOC I built used a mix of official sets and pieces I had to source. This MOC required only purchasing two official sets, which has two significant benefits – saving time and cost!

I also sorted the elements with greater refinement and placed them in my puzzle trays so it was easy to see the parts. I have ordered a set of drawers I use for parts to reserve exclusively for MOC building that will help with larger MOCs.

I had to utilize my parts inventory several times because I used an already constructed set, and the extra parts had been stored away! So, if you have built a Cozy House that you’re breaking apart to make this, try and find the additional pieces before you start to save some mid-build effort!

Instructions

This is my second MOC by Brick Artisan, and I noticed the instructions were even better this time – he has improved with practice! I appreciated how there were color charts on some pages to make sure you selected the correct piece. Like official Lego printed instructions, the colors can look slightly different than in real life, so it was a beautiful touch.

They were easy to follow, and I never had an issue understanding what to do next.

Set overview

The Classic Townhouse is a beautiful two-story, fully modular home. It has a small front garden and a covered patio at the back. The ground floor is open-plan with a corner kitchenette and a seating area. Stairs lead to the upper floor, which hosts the owner’s bedroom and a bathroom. There is plenty of natural light for your minifigures, with large floor-to-ceiling windows on both floors.

The front of the house is a mix of dark azure, white, dark gray, and black elements. The rear is primarily white brick, giving the back a clean, fresh appearance to contrast the backyard, which is packed with details.

As the interior and exterior share the same walls, the sides of the house are colorful.

Set highlights

There are so many things I adore about this MOC! Brick Artisan has added all the components I want in a build while using a transformative design – this is not a simple supersized version of the official set.

First, the set is fully modular, with three layers that come apart smoothly. It’s a massive improvement over the official design, which only opened on hinges, which isn’t functional in a city. Fully modular makes MILS plating easier and more practical and allows easy access to the house’s interior for minifigure placement and to appreciate all the internal details. Otherwise, the Lego set could be empty inside!

The sunset mosaic is inspired and is a creative way of using the small elements in the set. It looks utterly stunning, and I don’t mind that it is also the exterior wall, as this is a townhouse and will be up against another building. The same superlatives can be applied to the upstairs bookcase, which adds something to the decoration and utilizes many parts that would be left over otherwise.

I like that this is a complete house with a bathroom and staircase. I know it’s Lego and doesn’t need to be 100% accurate all the time, but I prefer builds with a home’s functionality and a logical floor plan. The only thing this layout lacks is somewhere for the son to sleep. He could have the couch, but this is a permanent residence rather than a weekend home like the original set. Adding further bedrooms complicates the interior as you’d have to go through one bedroom to get to the next.

Part usage is inspiring in this build – a testament to Lego’s versatility and Brick Artisan’s creativity. A prime example is the taps and brackets that generate the ornate lintel. I would never have thought of using these parts this way. Using the many small dark azure cheese wedges and the sand green modified bricks together to generate exciting bay windows is marvelous and a pleasure to behold.

Inside the roof, there is an easter egg build. I’m still determining what it is and what it represents, but Brick Artisan has added something inside the roof space for a reason!

Set revisions?

There is only one thing I would like to adjust about the design: a patio door cannot open. This is due to hitting a 4×2 plate that had to be used due to part constraints. I can easily replace this with a 1×4 plate so it can hinge open. The other door opens without issue, so the set doesn’t need modification to be functional.

Many masonry bricks are used at the side of the house that you will not see when it is placed in a street. I might switch some of these premium bricks out to keep them for other projects. Not a complaint about the design, though. Indeed, it’s a nice bonus!

Ratings

Build: 5/5

You will be satisfied with this build experience. It was straightforward, and I could film the entire process in a single sitting. The building is solid, with no structural elements needing reinforcement with additional pieces.

Here’s a video of me speed-building the set!

Display: 4/5

This building will look fabulous in any city and fits well with the modular series. The details on the facade shine and bring an element of class and prestige to the building. It’s common where I live for buildings to have murals, so it’s okay to have the sunset mural on the side of the building if it needs to be displayed.

The rear of the house is also glorious, and you can see the little back patio being an area of solitude in the bustling city. I appreciate that this is the most faithful area to the original set, with the vines and garden seating. It’s a lot more full than the back of most modulars.

On its MILS plate and ready to be placed in the city!

Price: 5/5

You can’t beat a two-story modular building for $120 – the cost of buying two Cozy House sets at retail. If and when this set goes on sale, getting this building will be an utter steal. As it’s two sets, you also have six minifigures to populate the home and the city. As I mentioned, if you have the parts, you can switch out some masonry pricks for plain ones, providing greater value to the set.

Final thoughts

I am utterly impressed by this MOC. It is not only attractive but functional. The construction is sturdy, beautiful, and inexpensive. It’s a relaxing build, too, filled with incredible part usage and building techniques. A must for Lego city builders!
